Lake Martin, Alabama — A graduation celebration turned tragic after a University of Georgia graduate died while jumping from a popular cliffside spot into an Alabama lake, leaving friends, family, and classmates devastated.
Graduation Celebration Ends in Tragedy
Authorities say Jayden Barreto, 24, disappeared underwater on Wednesday after leaping from Chimney Rock into Lake Martin, located roughly 40 miles outside Montgomery, Alabama.
Barreto had reportedly been celebrating his recent college graduation with friends when the incident occurred at the well-known lake attraction, which draws thrill seekers and adrenaline enthusiasts each year.
“Jayden jumped off the rock, and witnesses told us he never came back up,” Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene after receiving reports that a man had vanished beneath the water following the jump.
Massive Search Effort Under Challenging Conditions
Rescue teams launched an extensive search operation that lasted several hours before divers ultimately recovered Barreto’s body around 9:45 p.m., according to officials.
Authorities said divers located him on an underwater shelf approximately 50 feet below the surface, while the lake itself extended even deeper beyond that point.
Montgomery Fire Rescue confirmed that six divers participated in the difficult recovery mission.
“Crews worked alongside multiple partner agencies in a coordinated and extended search effort,” the department said in a Facebook post.
“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
The recovery effort was reportedly made more difficult because of the lake’s depth and underwater terrain.
Sheriff Describes Dangerous Impact of Jump
Investigators say there is currently no indication of foul play, though officials continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“The jump from Chimney Rock is like hitting a sheet of glass from 60 feet up,” Sheriff Franklin explained. “It all depends on how your body hits the water.”
“We have nothing that points to this being anything but a tragic accident, where the young man drowned,” the sheriff added. “But we are conducting an investigation.”
Authorities confirmed that Barreto’s body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to officially determine his cause of death.

The University of Georgia later confirmed that Barreto had graduated in 2025 with degrees in management information systems and psychology.
