5 Dead, 9 Injured in Minnesota Collision, Including Family Celebrating Father’s Birthday

Cottonwood County, Minnesota – A devastating head-on collision in rural Minnesota has left five people dead, including four members of the same family, after what was meant to be a joyful birthday gathering turned into an unimaginable tragedy.

The crash occurred on March 20 around 4:42 p.m. along Highway 71 near 240th Street, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Head-on collision claims multiple lives

Authorities say the crash involved a 2016 GMC Terrain SUV and a 2019 Ford Transit van carrying 13 occupants.

Four passengers in the van were killed:

  • Richard Johnson, 73
  • Kathleen Johnson, 73
  • Kelly Hargus, 49
  • Lindsey Rossow, 47

The driver of the SUV, Martin Hanson, 67, also died in the crash.

“The collision resulted in the loss of five lives, including four family members traveling together.”

Officials noted that road conditions were dry and no alcohol was suspected, though the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Family outing turned tragic

According to relatives, the group had gathered to celebrate Richard Johnson’s birthday, making the loss even more heartbreaking.

“What should have been a joyful family celebration turned into an unimaginable tragedy.”

The van was carrying extended family members, many of whom were closely connected and frequently spent time together.

Survivors hospitalized with serious injuries

Nine other individuals from the van were transported to hospitals with injuries ranging from critical to non-life-threatening.

Among them were the victims’ relatives, including sisters Kassandra Ambrose and Kristin Hanson, both 44.

“One survivor underwent a 7.5-hour surgery and was in a coma but is now awake and recovering.”

Another survivor sustained a broken arm, as doctors continue to monitor the injured.

Relative shares emotional tribute

Serena McCartney, a cousin of the victims, described the family as loving, close-knit, and full of life.

“I can’t make sense of any of it… they were just incredible people.”

She recalled childhood memories filled with laughter, gatherings, and a home that always welcomed others.

“Their home was full of love—you were always hugged tightly and made to feel welcome.”

McCartney also shared that the family has endured tragedy before, noting the loss of another sibling in a previous accident years ago.

Community rallies around grieving families

In the wake of the crash, multiple fundraisers have been launched to support both the victims’ families and those recovering from injuries.

“The community has come together to support those affected by this heartbreaking loss.”

Loved ones continue to remember the victims for their warmth, kindness, and the strong bonds they shared.
