OXNARD, CA – A second teenager has been found guilty of first-degree murder for the brutal 2025 beating and stomping death of a 67-year-old man outside an Oxnard church.
The Deadly Attack
The incident occurred on June 4, 2025, outside St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Surveillance footage captured the victim, Davy Glen Pichel, sitting next to his wheelchair near the church entrance when he was approached by two 14-year-old boys.
Prosecutors stated the juveniles violently beat and stomped Pichel, briefly walked away, and then returned to continue the assault. The next morning, a church volunteer discovered Pichel unresponsive with severe head and facial injuries. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Legal Accountability
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office announced the verdict on June 26, 2026. The second suspect, now 16 years old, was convicted of willful, deliberate, and premeditated first-degree murder.
- First Suspect: Pleaded guilty in January 2026 and received the maximum seven-year base term.
- Second Suspect: Faces a sentencing hearing on July 13, 2026, at the Juvenile Justice Center in Oxnard. He also faces a maximum base term of seven years.
Due to their minor status, the identities of both teenagers have been withheld by authorities.
California Juvenile Law Limits
Under California law, juveniles convicted of murder face a maximum of four to seven years in a Secured Youth Treatment Facility. Furthermore, the juvenile court system can only retain jurisdiction over an individual until they reach the age of 25.
Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko stated that the verdict ensures both individuals have been held accountable, expressing hope that the outcome brings a measure of justice to Pichel’s family.
