Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — A 30-year-old man was fatally shot during a domestic dispute in Philadelphia after police say an 11-year-old boy fired a gun during an argument involving his mother and her boyfriend.
Authorities say the incident happened Thursday and remains under investigation as officials determine whether charges will be filed.
The case has drawn attention across the community due to the involvement of a young child and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police say argument escalated inside the home
According to the Philadelphia Police Department, the victim has been identified as Jaimeer Jones-Walker, 30.
Investigators say the shooting happened after an argument between Jones-Walker and his girlfriend inside her residence.
Reports indicate the dispute centered around visitation involving the couple’s newborn baby, which escalated into a physical confrontation.
Police say the boy allegedly witnessed Jones-Walker physically assaulting his mother inside a bedroom before the shooting occurred.
Authorities say the 11-year-old then fired a single shot, striking Jones-Walker in the face.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene but Jones-Walker was pronounced dead at the location.
Gun belonged to the child’s mother
Investigators confirmed the firearm used in the shooting was legally registered to the boy’s mother.
Both the boy and his mother remained at the scene after the incident and cooperated with responding officers.
Police say no arrests were made immediately following the shooting, and the case is still being reviewed by investigators.
Officials have not announced whether the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office will pursue criminal charges.
Authorities say the boy is currently staying with another family member while the investigation continues.
Neighbors describe ongoing disputes
Neighbors told local reporters they had previously heard arguments between the couple.
One neighbor, Shyreea Blocker, said disputes inside the home were not uncommon.
“Arguing and fighting — that’s nothing new with them,” she said.
Another neighbor expressed concern about the emotional impact the event could have on the young boy.
“The things he’s going to suffer in his heart… could last him the rest of his life,” neighbor Gilbert Blocker said.
Domestic violence concerns highlighted
The case has renewed discussion around domestic violence situations and the impact they can have on children.
Police say the investigation will focus on the exact sequence of events that led to the shooting, including what occurred immediately before the boy fired the weapon.
Authorities have not released additional details about whether the shooting may be considered self-defense or a response to the alleged assault.
