Fremont, California – Federal authorities say a coordinated group of masked suspects carried out a lightning-fast smash-and-grab robbery at a high-end jewelry store, stealing an estimated $1.7 million worth of gold and diamonds in just over a minute.
The dramatic heist happened June 18, 2025, at Kumar Jewelers in Fremont, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, which recently released surveillance footage showing the robbery.
Investigators described the crime as a “mob-style takeover” carried out by a large, organized crew.
Authorities say nearly two dozen masked suspects stormed the jewelry store and cleared out most of its merchandise in about 70 seconds.
Surveillance Video Shows Coordinated Attack
The newly released video shows multiple vehicles pulling up outside the store, followed by a group of suspects quickly rushing inside.
Many of the individuals were dressed in dark clothing, hoodies, and masks, according to investigators.
Once inside, the group began smashing display cases with hammers and picks while stuffing jewelry into backpacks.
Prosecutors say the suspects stole between 75% and 80% of the store’s merchandise during the raid.
The suspects reportedly moved through the store with rapid and coordinated movements, allowing them to empty display cases in seconds.
Suspects Flee in Stolen Vehicles
After grabbing the jewelry, the suspects ran outside and escaped in several waiting vehicles.
Investigators say the getaway cars had been stolen prior to the robbery, making it difficult for authorities to immediately identify the suspects using license plate reader technology.
Authorities say the group fled in multiple vehicles that sped away in different directions.
Police officers attempted to pursue one of the vehicles, a black Acura, after the suspects fled the scene.
Police Chase Through Residential Streets
Court documents say the driver of the Acura led officers on a dangerous chase through Fremont neighborhoods.
During the pursuit, prosecutors say the driver:
- Passed vehicles on the wrong side of the road
- Ran multiple stop signs
- Reached speeds of about 80 mph
- Swerved across lanes while fleeing police
Officials say officers had to choose which suspect vehicle to pursue during the chaotic escape.
Four Suspects Arrested So Far
Authorities have since arrested four suspects believed to be connected to the robbery, including:
- Afatupetaiki Faasisila
- Jose Herrada-Aragon
- Andres Palestino
- Tom Parker Donegan
All of the suspects were reportedly around 19 or 20 years old at the time of the robbery.
Officials say most of the suspects involved in the smash-and-grab remain unidentified and at large.
Court records indicate that two of the suspects have been released while the case proceeds through the legal system.

Investigation Ongoing
Federal prosecutors say the investigation remains active as authorities work to identify the remaining suspects involved in the robbery.
Officials are also continuing to review surveillance footage and other evidence linked to the case.
The heist is one of several large-scale organized retail crimes reported across California in recent years, which have prompted increased attention from federal and state law enforcement.
