Pensacola, Florida — A Florida woman is facing felony charges after authorities say she caused thousands of dollars in damage across multiple Airbnb properties, raising concerns among short-term rental hosts about property safety and accountability.
Police identified the suspect as 31-year-old Nicolette Keough, who was arrested following an investigation into alleged damage at two separate rental homes in Pensacola.
Complaint leads to investigation
The case began on March 15 when an Airbnb host filed a criminal mischief complaint after discovering extensive damage inside one of her rental properties.
According to police reports, the owner noticed strong odors and visible damage throughout the home after the guest’s stay.
“The condition of the property raised immediate concern and prompted a formal complaint,” authorities said.
As investigators looked deeper into the situation, additional details began to emerge that led to further scrutiny of the suspect’s activities.
Damage reported across multiple household items
Authorities say the damage extended to a wide range of items within the property, significantly increasing the total loss.
Among the reported damaged items were:
- Furniture, including chairs and a bed
- Electronics such as a television and record player
- Appliances like a coffee maker and toaster
- Decorative and specialty items, including an antique chair and typewriter
“The estimated damage exceeded $3,000, qualifying the charge as a felony,” police confirmed.
Officials noted that the damage was not isolated to a single area, but rather spread throughout the home.
Second Airbnb property also affected
During the investigation, police discovered that a second Airbnb property owned by the same host had also been impacted.
“Similar conditions were reported at another rental location on the same street,” officials said.
This pattern led authorities to believe the incidents were connected, strengthening the case against the suspect.
Evidence and arrest
Police say evidence collected during the investigation helped identify Keough as the individual responsible.
Authorities also noted that certain materials reviewed during the case suggested the alleged actions may have been recorded and shared online.
“Investigators gathered sufficient evidence to move forward with an arrest,” police stated.
Keough was taken into custody and charged with felony criminal mischief due to the extent of the reported damages.
Released on bond as case moves forward
Following her arrest, Keough was released on bond, according to officials.
It remains unclear whether she has obtained legal representation at this time. The case is expected to proceed through the court system in the coming weeks.
Airbnb responds to incident
Airbnb issued a statement addressing the situation, emphasizing that such behavior is not tolerated on its platform.
“This kind of conduct has no place on Airbnb,” a company spokesperson said.
The company also confirmed that the guest has been removed from the platform and that it is working with the host through its AirCover protection program to assist with reimbursement.
Concerns grow among property owners
The incident has sparked renewed discussion about risks faced by short-term rental hosts, particularly when it comes to property damage and guest accountability.
While platforms like Airbnb offer protections, some hosts say incidents like this highlight the need for stricter screening and enforcement measures.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details may be released as the legal process continues.
