CHICAGO, IL — Chicagoans should keep their umbrellas handy this week. While a significant warmup is expected by Wednesday, the National Weather Service and local meteorologists are tracking a pattern of persistent rain chances that could last for the next 10 days.
The Immediate Outlook: Wind and Chill
A cold front moving across the region Sunday night is bringing a shift in conditions. According to the National Weather Service, showers are possible primarily along and north of Interstate 80. Residents should also be prepared for brisk conditions, with wind gusts potentially reaching 40 mph.
NBC 5 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Brant Miller noted that while overnight showers are expected, no severe weather is anticipated. Temperatures are projected to dip into the upper 30s by Monday morning.
Monday and Tuesday: A Brief Drying Period
Monday offers a slight reprieve. Highs will hover in the upper 40s, though it will feel cooler than the weekend. While the daytime looks mostly dry, a few stray sprinkles could return Monday evening.
Tuesday is shaping up to be the “chillest” day of the week:
- Morning: Feels-like temperatures will plummet to the mid 20s.
- Afternoon: Highs will struggle to reach 40 degrees under partly sunny skies.
Midweek Warmup and Extended Rain
The weather story takes a turn on Wednesday as a warm front lifts northward. Temperatures are expected to surge into the 60s, but that warmth comes with a trade-off.
“We’re looking at a pattern of day-to-day showers,” Miller said. Widespread rain is likely Wednesday night into Thursday as a new weather boundary arrives. While the current forecast does not indicate severe storms, Miller cautioned that if temperatures climb higher than expected, the intensity of the rain could change.
The 10-Day Trend
Looking ahead, the Chicago area may be entering a damp stretch. Current models suggest a chance of showers nearly every day for the next week and a half. Fortunately, for those worried about spring storms, Miller emphasized that no severe weather is expected at this point.
What to watch for: * Wind: Gusts up to 40 mph Sunday night/Monday.
- Commute: Chilly “feels-like” temps in the 20s Tuesday morning.
- Outdoor Plans: Best chance for dry air is Monday afternoon.
