Dallas Officer Assaulted, Suspect Shot During Violent Traffic Stop Near Highland Park; Driver at Large

DALLAS, TX — An early morning traffic stop near the prestigious Highland Park area turned violent Sunday, leaving a Dallas police officer injured and a suspect hospitalized with a gunshot wound. As of Sunday afternoon, investigators are still searching for the driver of the vehicle who fled the scene during the chaos.

The incident unfolded at approximately 2:16 a.m. in the 4100 block of Mockingbird Lane, a busy thoroughfare that borders the Southern Methodist University (SMU) campus and the Highland Park neighborhood.

Escalation on Mockingbird Lane

According to the Dallas Police Department, an officer initiated a traffic stop after spotting a vehicle traveling without its headlights on. In many cases, this is a routine stop, but the situation escalated almost immediately after the vehicle pulled over.

Police reports indicate that a passenger exited the vehicle and began walking toward the officer’s squad car. The officer stepped out of his vehicle and gave clear verbal commands for the individual to return to the car. However, the man ignored the orders and continued to approach.

The confrontation turned physical when the man allegedly struck the officer in the face at least once. In response to the assault, the officer drew his service weapon and fired at least two shots, striking the suspect at least once.

Hospitalization and Suspect Status

Both the officer and the unidentified suspect were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

  • The Officer: Suffered facial injuries from the assault.
  • The Suspect: Sustained at least one gunshot wound.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the individuals involved or provided a detailed update on their current medical conditions.

The Search for the Driver

While the passenger was detained following the shooting, the driver of the vehicle managed to speed away from the scene as the officer dealt with the immediate threat. Dallas Police have confirmed that the driver remains at large, and no description of the vehicle or the suspect has been publicly released yet.

The 4100 block of Mockingbird Lane remained closed for several hours Sunday morning as forensic teams processed the scene. Investigators are likely reviewing dashcam and bodycam footage, as well as surveillance video from nearby businesses and residential security systems.

Safety Concerns in the Community

The shooting occurred in an area known for high foot traffic due to its proximity to the university and high-end shopping districts. Local residents expressed shock at the level of violence during what should have been a standard traffic violation stop.

The Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit is leading the ongoing probe into the incident. Standard protocol for officer-involved shootings typically includes an internal administrative review and an investigation by the District Attorney’s office.
