FALFURRIAS, TX – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has released dramatic body camera footage showing the rescue of 39 suspected undocumented immigrants from a burning tractor-trailer following a high-speed pursuit near the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Checkpoint Flight
The incident began on Thursday, June 4, at a Border Patrol checkpoint near Falfurrias. According to DPS officials, Border Patrol agents ordered a secondary inspection of the 18-wheeler after a K-9 unit alerted handlers to something suspicious inside.
Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated and fled the scene, triggering a pursuit with state troopers.
Spike Strips and Fire
To stop the fleeing semi-truck, officers deployed spike strips, successfully flattening the vehicle’s tires. The driver continued to flee on the truck’s rims, creating intense friction that eventually caused the trailer to catch fire.
As smoke and flames began to engulf the vehicle, state troopers made a desperate, high-stakes attempt to breach the locked trailer doors.
Mass Rescue and Arrest
Troopers successfully opened the burning trailer and rescued 39 individuals trapped inside. All occupants were safely extracted from the smoke-filled compartment.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was immediately taken into custody and is now facing federal human trafficking charges.
