Philadelphia Breaks 40-Year-Old June Temperature Record

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Philadelphia shattered a long-standing heat record on Thursday, June 11, as temperatures soared past a 40-year milestone before giving way to late-night storms.

Record-Breaking Heat

By 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, the temperature in Philadelphia reached 96 degrees, officially breaking the previous June 11 record of 95 degrees, which was set back in 1986.

The extreme heat created a very warm and muggy evening across the region, with overnight lows expected to hover in the low to mid-70s alongside patches of heavy fog.

Incoming Storms and Friday Severe Weather Threat

A broken line of storms is advancing east, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds. These storms are expected to hit South Jersey and central Delaware around 10:00 p.m. before dissipating after 11:00 p.m.

However, the relief will be short-lived. A severe weather threat remains in place for Friday afternoon and evening ahead of an approaching cold front. The National Weather Service warns that damaging winds will be the primary concern.

Dangerous Heat Index on Friday

Friday is forecast to be another scorcher, with actual temperatures climbing into the low to mid-90s. Due to intense humidity, inland areas could experience dangerous heat index values as high as 104 degrees.

Weekend Outlook: Cooler Air on the Way

A cold front will push through the region on Saturday, bringing a much-needed break from the oppressive humidity.

  • Saturday: Bright and sunny with lower humidity and more comfortable temperatures in the upper 80s.
  • Sunday: Humidity returns by afternoon, bringing a secondary round of showers and storms late Sunday evening.
  • Next Week: Temperatures will drop back to near-normal levels, reaching the low 80s on Monday and the comfortable 70s by Tuesday.
