Patchogue Man Indicted for Attempted Murder After Alleged Window-Entry Stabbing of Ex’s Son

PATCHOGUE, NY — A 42-year-old Long Island man is facing a potential quarter-century behind bars following a “violent and calculated” attack inside a South Shore home.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced on Friday, May 1, that Robert Schreiber has been indicted on multiple felony charges, including second-degree attempted murder, after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and stabbed her 22-year-old son while the family slept.

The Break-In and Attack

According to the District Attorney’s office, the incident began following a breakup on April 17. Schreiber’s long-term girlfriend ended their relationship and locked him out of her Patchogue residence.

Authorities allege that just after 8 a.m. the following morning, Schreiber returned to the house and gained entry through an unlocked window. Once inside, he reportedly headed straight for the victim’s bedroom.

“Schreiber allegedly proceeded to the victim’s bedroom, kicked in the door, and stabbed him seven times throughout his head, neck, and shoulder,” the D.A.’s office stated in a press release.

Survival and Arrest

The victim’s family members were awakened by the attack and intervened, calling 911 and allowing the 22-year-old to escape down the stairs. When officers arrived at the scene, they arrested Schreiber and reportedly found the knife used in the attack still in his possession.

The victim was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital, where he received life-saving treatment and numerous staples to close his wounds.

DA Speaks Out on Domestic Violence Escalation

Suffolk County DA Raymond Tierney emphasized that this case is a stark reminder of the dangers surrounding domestic disputes.

“Domestic violence does not always end when a relationship does; it often escalates,” Tierney said. “This was a violent attack on a young man in his own home… We will aggressively prosecute this defendant and seek justice.”

Charges and Bail

Schreiber is currently facing a laundry list of charges, including:

  • Second-degree attempted murder
  • First-degree burglary
  • First-degree attempted assault
  • Endangering the welfare of a child

He is being held on a $1,000,000 bond and is scheduled to return to court on May 28. If convicted on the top charges, Schreiber faces up to 25 years in state prison.

Community Discussion: Stay Safe, Patchogue

This incident has shaken the local South Shore community, raising questions about home security and the terrifying speed at which domestic situations can turn deadly.

What do you think? Should there be stricter monitoring for individuals recently removed from a home due to domestic disputes? Are you concerned about the rise of such violent incidents in our local neighborhoods?
