Manhattan Apartment Fire Turns Deadly Overnight, Leaves 3 Dead and Dozens of Families Homeless

MANHATTAN, NY – A devastating overnight fire at an Inwood apartment building has left three people dead, several others in critical condition, and more than a dozen families displaced.

Early Morning Tragedy in Inwood

The FDNY responded shortly after midnight on Monday to a six-story building on Dyckman Street, located between Vermilyea Avenue and Broadway. The fire reportedly broke out on the second floor, quickly spreading and forcing residents to flee via fire escapes.

More than 200 fire and EMS personnel arrived at the scene to combat the flames. Despite their efforts, officials confirmed that three individuals were found deceased inside the building.

Casualties and Injuries

In addition to the fatalities, the fire resulted in several other injuries:

  • Critical Condition: Five individuals were rushed to local hospitals in life-threatening condition.
  • Moderate/Minor Injuries: Four other residents are being treated for less severe injuries.
  • First Responders: One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the operation.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims pending family notification.

Families Displaced; Red Cross Responding

The blaze has rendered a portion of the building uninhabitable, leaving more than a dozen families homeless. The Red Cross is currently on-site providing emergency housing and immediate assistance to those affected.

Crucial Safety Observation

Fire officials noted a significant detail at the scene: apartments where doors were kept closed sustained very little damage. This observation follows a recent FDNY public service announcement emphasizing that closing doors during a fire can significantly slow the spread of smoke and flames.

Investigation Ongoing

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by FDNY fire marshals.
