MELROSE, MA – A Monday afternoon at Winthrop Elementary School turned into an emergency scene after a large tree collapsed onto a playground, injuring two children and one adult.
The Incident
Emergency responders from the Melrose Police and Fire Departments arrived at the school on 1st Street shortly after school hours on May 4, 2026, following a 911 call. Upon arrival, officials found a tree had toppled directly onto the playground area.
Two children and one adult were treated at the scene before being transported by ambulance to area hospitals. While the extent of their injuries has not been officially confirmed, early reports describe the accident as serious.
Investigation Underway
Aerial footage from the scene shows the massive tree lying across the playground equipment. The area remained cordoned off with police tape for several hours as investigators worked to determine what caused the tree to fall.
