18-Year-Old Arrested In Fatal Shooting Near Grand Rapids School

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A verbal dispute over an informal soccer game turned deadly Tuesday evening near Southwest Elementary School, leaving a 15-year-old boy and a woman dead.

According to Grand Rapids Interim Police Chief Joe Trigg, the incident began when an 18-year-old man asked to join a soccer game involving several juveniles. After being turned away, a verbal altercation broke out.

Police report the suspect then pulled out a firearm and shot the 15-year-old boy. When an adult woman attempted to verbally intervene and help the young victim, she was also targeted and killed.

Community and Schools Impacted

The shooting occurred in the presence of at least seven or eight other children and teenagers. Chief Trigg described the scene as “horrific,” noting the lasting impact on the young witnesses.

In response to the tragedy, the Grand Rapids school district canceled classes on Wednesday at Southwest Elementary and another nearby school to allow students and staff to process the event.

Suspect in Custody

The 18-year-old suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting but was later located and arrested by authorities. Local residents expressed their grief at the site, describing the loss as one felt by the entire community.

Police have not yet released the names of the victims or the suspect as the investigation continues.
