BRAWLEY, CA – A relentless “earthquake swarm” centered near Brawley has kept residents in Imperial County on edge this weekend, with over a dozen tremors recorded between Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning.
The Peak of the Swarm
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the activity peaked just after midnight on Sunday with a magnitude 4.7 earthquake. While many of the preceding quakes stayed below magnitude 4.0, this larger tremor sent light shaking across a wide area.
Residents from the Coachella Valley down to Calexico reported feeling the movement, with reports reaching as far west as San Diego and south into Mexicali.
Shallow Depths Increase Intensity
The swarm began Saturday at approximately 4:14 p.m. with an initial 3.5 magnitude quake centered about two miles west-southwest of Brawley. Experts note that these earthquakes are occurring at shallow depths—between 5 and 10 miles.
Shallow quakes are typically felt more intensely by residents because the energy is released closer to the Earth’s surface. This recent activity follows a busy week for seismic movement across California, stretching from the North Coast through the Inland Empire.
No Immediate Reports of Damage
Despite the frequency of the shakes, local authorities have confirmed:
- No injuries have been reported at this time.
- No significant structural damage has been documented in Brawley or surrounding cities.
- No Tsunami threat exists for the California coast.
Expert Monitoring
Seismologists are continuing to monitor the data to determine if this swarm is tapering off or if it could lead to a larger event. Residents in the Imperial Valley are advised to ensure their emergency kits are ready, as aftershocks in a swarm can continue for several days.
