Lenexa, Kansas — A disturbing murder case in Lenexa, Kansas, has taken another major turn after a man accused of killing his mother and aunt pleaded guilty following a chilling confession that stunned Walgreens employees.
Guilty Plea Ends Murder Case Without Trial
Luke Anthony Howard, 35, pleaded guilty on May 13 to two counts of intentional second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his mother, Valerie A. Howard, 63, and his aunt, Joyce E. Austin, 71.
Howard had originally been charged with first-degree murder, but prosecutors reached a plea agreement that reduced the charges.
The killings occurred inside the home the three shared in the 15400 block of West 90th Street in Lenexa.
According to investigators, the tragic violence followed escalating tensions inside the residence and an eviction notice that had recently been served against Howard.
Bloody Confession at Walgreens
The shocking case first came to light on February 12, 2025, when Howard allegedly entered a Walgreens store in Liberty wearing blood-covered clothing.
According to court documents, he approached pharmacy employees and told them he wanted to surrender to authorities.
