New York City, New York — Millions of Americans preparing for Memorial Day weekend may have to keep umbrellas and rain gear close by as forecasters warn of widespread thunderstorms, heavy downpours and possible flash flooding across large portions of the country.
The holiday weekend, often considered the unofficial start of summer, is expected to bring a mixed weather pattern nationwide, with stormy conditions threatening outdoor gatherings and travel plans from Texas to New England.
Storms Expected Across Major Parts of the Country
Weather experts say the most widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected each day from the south-central United States into the Northeast throughout the extended holiday weekend.
According to forecasters, repeated rounds of rain could create difficult travel conditions and disrupt outdoor ceremonies, barbecues, sporting events and beach plans.
“While much of the rainfall will help ease drought conditions locally, some areas will receive multiple rounds of heavy downpours that could trigger flash flooding,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said.
The heaviest rainfall is expected across parts of Texas, western Tennessee and Kentucky, where several inches of rain may fall over multiple days.
Flash Flood Concerns Increasing
Meteorologists warn that widespread rainfall totals between 1 and 4 inches are likely in several areas, while isolated communities could receive more than 6 inches of rain.
Repeated thunderstorms moving over the same locations could increase the risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone regions.
Travelers driving during the holiday weekend may face reduced visibility, ponding on roadways and delays caused by severe weather conditions.
Residents from central and northeastern Texas to West Virginia are being advised to closely monitor local forecasts and keep rain gear nearby as storms continue developing through the weekend.
Northeast May See Wet Start to Holiday Weekend
Parts of the Northeast are also expected to deal with periods of steady rain, particularly on Saturday and Sunday.
Forecasters say conditions may gradually improve by Memorial Day itself, although lingering drizzle and isolated showers could still impact outdoor events and memorial ceremonies.
Some areas may struggle to see sunshine for much of the weekend as thick cloud cover dominates the region.
In addition to rain, thunderstorms could create lightning delays for sporting events and outdoor gatherings across several eastern states.
Florida and Southeast Face Spotty Storms
The Florida Peninsula is expected to see occasional thundershowers through the weekend, though forecasters say much of the time should remain dry.
Meanwhile, the interior Southeast may experience scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms, a typical weather pattern during late spring and early summer.
While not everyone will see severe weather, sudden downpours and lightning remain possible in isolated areas.
Southwest Expected to Have Best Holiday Weather
Unlike the stormy eastern half of the country, the Southwest is forecast to enjoy some of the best weather conditions during the holiday weekend.
Sunshine and seasonable temperatures are expected across much of Arizona, Nevada and California, making the region one of the top spots for outdoor activities and travel.
Maryland Could See Record-Breaking Heat This Week Before Storms Crash the Memorial Day Weekend
However, officials are urging caution due to increasingly dry conditions and growing wildfire concerns.
Forecasters warned people using campfires, grills or outdoor flames to remain careful during the holiday weekend.
Cooler Conditions Expected in Pacific Northwest
Parts of the Pacific Northwest are expected to experience cooler temperatures and scattered showers, especially on Memorial Day itself.
Forecasters also noted that the northern Plains could see a significant warmup heading into Monday, creating a sharp contrast in weather patterns across the country.
As millions prepare to travel and gather with loved ones, weather experts say staying updated on changing forecasts will be especially important this Memorial Day weekend.
