Narragansett, Rhode Island — A chaotic scene unfolded at a crowded Rhode Island beach after police say an 18-year-old allegedly stabbed three people while hundreds of teenagers packed the shoreline during a large gathering.
The violent incident erupted Tuesday afternoon at Narragansett Town Beach, sparking panic among beachgoers and prompting a major law enforcement response.
Teen Arrested After Violent Beach Incident
Authorities identified the suspect as Willy Medina, 18, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. According to the Narragansett Police Department, Medina was arrested Friday in connection with the stabbing attack that happened shortly after 3 p.m.
Police allege Medina attacked three individuals during the chaos as large crowds of teenagers flooded the beach area.
Video footage obtained by local media reportedly showed the crowd erupting into panic as the violence unfolded.
The three victims suffered minor stab wounds and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Suspect Was Already Out on Bail
Investigators revealed that Medina was already out on bail stemming from an earlier gun-related case in Pawtucket.
According to police, Medina had previously been charged after a disturbance in April involving a crowd and gunfire.
Authorities alleged that during that earlier incident, Medina and another teen were among a large group when a gunshot was fired, striking a parked vehicle.
As part of that case, Medina faced charges including carrying a pistol without a license, firing in a compact area, vandalism and disorderly conduct.
Following the beach stabbing investigation, the Rhode Island State Police Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Medina in Pawtucket.
He was charged with one count of felony assault.
Court Orders and Ongoing Investigation
Medina was arraigned Friday in 4th District Court and held as a bail violator.
According to reports, the court also ordered him to have no contact with minors while the case proceeds.
Officials have not yet publicly released a motive behind the stabbing, and authorities confirmed the investigation remains ongoing.
Police are continuing to review evidence and videos captured during the large gathering at the beach.
Multiple Teen Gatherings Spark Safety Concerns
The violence at Narragansett Town Beach came amid a series of large teen gatherings and so-called “takeovers” reported across several East Coast beach communities leading into Memorial Day Weekend.
Just hours before the Narragansett stabbing, approximately 1,200 teens reportedly overran Second Beach in Middletown, Rhode Island, located roughly 20 miles away.
Police there arrested several individuals between the ages of 17 and 19 on charges including disorderly conduct and obstructing officers.
One of the more serious incidents involved 18-year-old Ronan Pinkham of Massachusetts, who was accused of striking a Newport police officer with his vehicle while allegedly trying to flee the crowded parking lot.
Authorities said Pinkham later admitted to driving under the influence and now faces felony assault and DUI charges.

Teen Takeovers Expanding Across States
Officials say similar incidents have recently occurred in multiple states.
In Long Branch, New Jersey, several hundred teens and young adults reportedly took over a popular boardwalk area earlier this week, leading to multiple arrests.
Meanwhile, police in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, arrested four Delaware State University students accused of organizing a large alcohol-fueled gathering that resulted in a heavy police presence.
The suspects in that case now face charges related to facilitating a riot and second-degree conspiracy.
Law enforcement agencies across the region are increasing patrols ahead of the busy holiday weekend as officials attempt to prevent additional violent gatherings and disturbances.
