Boston, Massachusetts — The Boston community is mourning the loss of a veteran firefighter after Robert “Bobby” Kilduff Jr. died while battling a large house fire in Dorchester on Saturday night.
The tragic incident unfolded around 8:15 p.m. on Treadway Road, where firefighters responded to heavy flames tearing through the roof of a residential home.
Firefighter Dies During Intense Blaze
According to officials, Kilduff fell from the third floor of the burning home while crews were actively fighting the fire.
A mayday call was immediately issued following the fall, triggering an urgent rescue response from fellow firefighters on scene.
Kilduff was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite emergency efforts, he later died from his injuries.
Early Sunday morning, firefighters lined up outside the hospital to honor their fallen colleague during a dignified transfer as his body was moved to the medical examiner’s office.
The emotional scene highlighted the deep respect and admiration Kilduff earned throughout his career in the Boston Fire Department.
Veteran Firefighter Remembered as a Hero
Kilduff was a third-generation firefighter and also proudly served as a U.S. Marine Corps veteran before dedicating his life to protecting the people of Boston.
Boston Fire Commissioner Rodney Marshall became emotional while speaking about the firefighter during a Sunday morning news conference.
“Bobby was known throughout the department as one of those people you could go to for anything. He was just a firefighter’s firefighter. He would do anything for you, he would do anything for the people of the city,” Marshall said.
Colleagues described Kilduff as deeply committed to both his fellow firefighters and the community he served every day.
Family and Community Mourning Loss
Kilduff is survived by his adult son and daughter, along with countless friends, fellow firefighters and loved ones devastated by the sudden loss.
“He was our friend, our brother, and a dedicated family man,” Boston Firefighters Local 718 President Sam Dillon said in a statement.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also paid tribute to Kilduff, calling him a true hero who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting others.

“Boston lost a hero tonight,” Wu said during the news conference.
She added:
“Firefighter Robert Kilduff, Jr. came from a family of firefighters, and he held this calling as the highest duty to serve and protect.”
Wu credited Kilduff and his fellow firefighters with helping ensure every resident escaped the dangerous fire safely.
“Because of his actions, working alongside his fellow firefighters, every resident came out of the flames safe and sound.”
Massachusetts Honors Fallen Firefighter
In honor of Kilduff’s sacrifice, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey ordered flags across the state to be lowered to half-staff.
Healey praised the firefighter’s bravery and dedication, noting the lives he saved during the fire.
“His heroic actions last night saved the lives of five individuals, in addition to the countless people he rescued throughout the course of his distinguished career.”
She also emphasized the dangers firefighters face every day in the line of duty.
“His death serves as a reminder of the dangers firefighters face every day when they put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe,” Healey said.
Investigation Into Fire Continues
Authorities have not yet released additional details about what caused the fire or the circumstances surrounding Kilduff’s fall.
The Boston Fire Department is expected to continue investigating the incident in the coming days.
