Seattle, Washington — Hundreds of volunteers gathered at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home & Cemetery in Seattle to honor thousands of fallen service members during a moving Memorial Day tradition that has continued for nearly a century.
Armed with stacks of American flags, veterans, families and community members came together to pay tribute to approximately 6,000 veterans buried at the cemetery.
Volunteers Place Thousands of American Flags
The annual event began with volunteers carefully placing American flags beside veteran headstones throughout the cemetery grounds.
People of all ages participated in the tribute, walking row by row through the cemetery to ensure each veteran was remembered ahead of Memorial Day observances.
The act of placing flags has become a deeply meaningful tradition for many attendees, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made by military members throughout American history.
This year marked the cemetery’s 98th annual Memorial Day Celebration, drawing around 200 attendees from across the Seattle area.
Community Reflects on Veterans’ Sacrifices
Many participants said the ceremony was an important opportunity to reflect on the hardships and sacrifices endured by military personnel.
Among those attending was Karen Hogel, who spoke emotionally about the importance of remembering what veterans gave up in service to the country.
“When you hear people complain about just little things like the neighbor doesn’t put the garbage cans away or my latte isn’t hot, remember that some of these people are out in the trenches,” Hogel said. “All of that is nothing compared to the sacrifice these people give.”
Her remarks resonated with many in attendance as families and veterans paused to reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day beyond holiday gatherings and long weekends.
Memorial Service Honors Fallen Heroes
Following the flag placement, attendees gathered for a formal memorial service honoring the lives and sacrifices of veterans laid to rest at the cemetery.
The ceremony featured speeches from military personnel and special guests, including representatives from Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Special Forces.
Service members spoke about courage, duty and the importance of preserving the memory of those who served the nation.
The emotional ceremony also included several traditional military honors, including a moment of silence, the playing of “Taps,” and a flag-folding demonstration.
As “Taps” echoed across the cemetery grounds, many attendees stood quietly, some visibly emotional while remembering loved ones and fallen heroes.
“Walk of Honor” Shares Veterans’ Stories
After the formal service concluded, participants joined the annual “Walk of Honor” through the Veterans Cemetery section.
During the walk, stories of military service, bravery and sacrifice were shared among attendees. Organizers said the tradition helps ensure veterans are remembered not just as names on headstones, but as individuals with families, histories and legacies.
Many participants stopped at gravesites to pay personal respects, while others reflected on the broader meaning of service and sacrifice.
Longstanding Tradition Continues in Seattle
The Memorial Day event at Evergreen Washelli has become one of Seattle’s longstanding traditions, bringing together veterans, active-duty military families and local residents year after year.
Organizers say the gathering continues to grow as more people seek meaningful ways to honor those who gave their lives in military service.
For many attendees, the ceremony serves as a powerful reminder that freedom often comes at an immense cost paid by generations of service members and their families.
