CHICAGO, IL – A heavy police presence swarmed a West Side neighborhood Thursday afternoon after a shooting involving an FBI agent left one person dead.
Heavy Police Response on West Lexington
The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. near the Garfield Park neighborhood, according to a statement from the FBI Chicago Field Office.
By 3:40 p.m., dozens of law enforcement officers—including FBI agents and Chicago police officers armed with long guns—flooded the 3700 block of West Lexington Street. The Chicago Fire Department arrived shortly after and confirmed that one individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation Handed Over to FBI Division
Authorities have not yet clarified whether the deceased individual was directly shot by the FBI agent, or what led up to the confrontation.
Because the incident involved a federal agent, the case has been taken over for internal review. The FBI Chicago Field Office released the following statement:
“The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously. In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under review by the FBI’s Inspection Division.”
Local Impact and Next Steps
The Chicago Police Department did not immediately release additional details regarding their role in the response. Heavy police activity and taped-off perimeters caused traffic disruptions throughout the surrounding West Side blocks during the evening commute.
As this is an ongoing federal matter, officials stated that no further details regarding the identity of the deceased or the agent involved are being made public at this time.
