Washington, D.C. — A California teenager completed one of the most remarkable comeback stories in recent Scripps National Spelling Bee history, capturing the championship after a dramatic lightning-round tiebreaker and setting a new competition record in the process.
14-year-old Shrey Parikh of Rancho Cucamonga, California, entered the competition as one of the favorites and left as the nation’s top speller after an unforgettable final night in Washington, D.C.
Record-Breaking Finish Secures Championship
The championship came down to a tense spell-off against finalist Ishaan Gupta, following several highly competitive rounds among the nation’s best young spellers.
When the tiebreaker began, Shrey quickly found his rhythm and raced through word after word with impressive confidence and speed.
By the end of the 90-second challenge, Shrey had correctly spelled 32 words, setting a new spell-off record since the format was introduced in 2022.
Ishaan delivered a strong performance of his own, correctly spelling 25 words, but the difference proved enough to secure Shrey’s victory.
“I was counting and I’m like, OK, this is more than 30,” said Shrey’s mother, Khyati Mehta. “And at that point, I’m like, ‘I think this is it.’”
The winning word was later identified as “bromocriptine,” a polypeptide alkaloid that mimics dopamine activity.
Overcoming Nerves on the National Stage
Despite appearing calm during much of the competition, Shrey admitted he was battling nerves every time he approached the microphone.
“Once I get the word,” Shrey said, “I’m not really nervous anymore, because then it’s all in my control.”
A brief technical issue before the spell-off added even more tension. While crews attempted to repair a malfunctioning buzzer, Shrey was forced to wait several extra minutes before beginning the deciding round.
“That was really, like, scary for me,” he admitted.
Once the competition resumed, however, he delivered one of the strongest performances in recent spelling bee history.
Incredible Comeback After Previous Heartbreak
Shrey’s championship journey is especially remarkable because he was absent from the national competition the year before.
The talented speller failed to advance after an unexpected setback during his school spelling bee, where illness and a high fever contributed to him missing the word “calipers.”
The disappointment was devastating at the time.

“Right now I’m probably the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m just so happy and relieved, and just such a flood of emotions,” Shrey said. “At my school bee last year, I was really dejected and just very upset. It didn’t even sink in until the next day. I had a really tough time, but I’m glad I was able to bounce back.”
After taking time away from competition, he recommitted himself to studying and improving every aspect of his spelling skills.
Coaches Praise Relentless Work Ethic
Those closest to Shrey say his dedication played a major role in his success.
Former spelling champion Sohum Sukhatankar said Shrey constantly analyzed mistakes and focused on improvement.
“Whenever I would quiz him, he would take notice of his missed words. He’d analyze every missed word he had, try to figure out why he missed it,” Sukhatankar said. “All the time I coached him, he’d never miss a word twice.”
Coach Sam Evans was equally impressed by Shrey’s determination.
“I’ve really never seen someone put this much effort into spelling bees, into learning everything that he possibly can,” Evans said. “Shrey is relentless.”
Champion Earns National Recognition
Along with the prestigious title, Shrey received $52,500 in prize money, a custom championship trophy and several additional prizes.
His victory also continues a remarkable trend in Scripps National Spelling Bee history. Shrey became the 31st champion of Indian heritage in the last 37 competitions, continuing a streak that began in 1999.
Reflecting on his son’s achievement, Shrey’s father summed up the performance simply:
“When it comes to competition, he goes all the way.”
