LAWRENCE, MA – A Lawrence police officer was airlifted to a Boston hospital with severe injuries Tuesday night after a traffic stop turned violent on East Haverhill Street.
The Incident on East Haverhill Street
The incident began during a routine traffic stop when officers discovered the driver was operating with a revoked license, and the passenger had two active warrants.
According to the Lawrence Police Department, while officers were placing the driver into custody, the passenger suddenly jumped into the driver’s seat in an attempt to flee. An officer tried to intervene, became trapped by the vehicle, and was dragged for approximately two blocks.
Severe Injuries and Medical Response
Lawrence Mayor Brian DePeña confirmed Tuesday night that the officer suffered several broken ribs.
Emergency crews initially treated the officer at a local facility in Lawrence before he was airlifted to a Boston hospital for specialized care. Medical personnel are currently conducting tests to ensure the officer did not sustain internal injuries or head trauma.
Suspects in Custody
The identities of the driver and passenger have not yet been publicly released by authorities. The passenger now faces heavy charges for the sudden flight and the assault on the officer.
The investigation remains ongoing as local detectives process the scene on East Haverhill Street.
