South Florida First Responders Hailed as Heroes After Rescuing Child From Deadly Pool Accident

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida — Two South Florida first responders are being recognized for their life-saving actions after helping rescue a 5-year-old boy who nearly drowned during Memorial Day weekend.

During a Lauderdale-by-the-Sea commission meeting on Tuesday evening, Broward Fire Rescue firefighter Broderick Espinoza and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Jesus Fuentes were honored for their quick response and teamwork, which helped save young Tyler Nelson’s life following a terrifying pool accident.

The recognition comes just weeks after the dramatic incident unfolded at the Plunge Beach Resort, where a family vacation nearly ended in tragedy.

Child Had No Pulse After Being Pulled From Pool

The near-drowning occurred on May 24 when 5-year-old Tyler Nelson was pulled from a swimming pool at the resort.

According to officials, Tyler was unresponsive and had no pulse when he was brought out of the water.

At the time, Espinoza was off duty but immediately sprang into action. Without hesitation, he began performing CPR in an effort to revive the child.

Body camera footage later captured the intense moments that followed as first responders and bystanders worked together to save Tyler’s life.

Reflecting on the experience, Espinoza said he was completely focused on helping the child survive.

“I’m just truly blessed that he’s alive and well, here with us,” said Espinoza. “Honestly it was all a blur, I was just really focused. I didn’t really know anyone was around us.”

Team Effort Helped Bring Tyler Back

As the emergency unfolded, Lt. Jesus Fuentes and two off-duty nurses joined Espinoza to assist with life-saving efforts.

Their combined training and quick response proved critical.

Within minutes, Tyler regained a pulse and began breathing on his own, giving his family renewed hope during an incredibly frightening situation.

Fuentes credited professional training and instinct for the successful outcome.

“It’s just a humbling experience,” said Fuentes. “At the end of the day, we didn’t do anything that anybody with our training wouldn’t do. Our training just took over.”

The successful rescue highlights how fast action during water emergencies can make the difference between life and death.

Young Boy Makes Remarkable Recovery

Following the incident, Tyler was transported to a hospital, where he spent two days in the intensive care unit.

Fortunately, doctors later released him with a clean bill of health, an outcome his family considers nothing short of a miracle.

His mother, Markita Pittman-Nelson, expressed deep gratitude toward the first responders and medical professionals who stepped in when her son needed help the most.

“They’re angels, they allowed God to literally use them to be a vessel to save my son,” said Markita Pittman-Nelson. “I mean, two firefighters and two nurses, what more could a person ask for.”

For Tyler’s family, the rescue means they can continue creating memories with their son—something that seemed uncertain in those terrifying moments by the pool.

Community Celebrates Local Heroes

The recognition ceremony served as a reminder of the critical role first responders play both on and off duty.

Despite being praised as heroes, Fuentes emphasized that he and Espinoza were simply doing what they had been trained to do.

“I understand it as a parent myself, I understand how emotional it is for her to still have Tyler around and how grateful she is to us,” Fuentes said. “Like I said, at the end of the day, it’s nothing that we think of. It’s nothing that we make a big deal out of, we’re just doing our duty.”

While the firefighters may view their actions as part of the job, for Tyler’s family and the South Florida community, their quick thinking and dedication made all the difference.
