K-9 Deployed To End Dramatic Westminster Standoff

WESTMINSTER, CA – A police dog successfully brought down an uncooperative carjacking suspect Wednesday morning following a pursuit that ended in a tense street standoff.

The Pursuit

The incident began around 8:00 a.m. when Fountain Valley Police received a report of a carjacking involving a white Toyota RAV4 SUV. Officers quickly spotted the vehicle on the 22 Freeway and initiated a pursuit.

The suspect, identified by police as 33-year-old Peter Espoto of Garden Grove, eventually stopped the SUV near the busy intersection of Goldenwest Street and Garden Grove Boulevard.

Standoff and K-9 Deployment

After exiting the vehicle, Espoto refused to comply with officers’ commands, leading to a tense standoff in the middle of the street.

To resolve the situation safely, officers deployed a police K-9 around 8:30 a.m. Aerial footage of the scene showed the dog rushing Espoto and forcing him to the ground, allowing officers to move in swiftly and take him into custody.

Injuries and Aftermath

Espoto suffered minor injuries during the apprehension and was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before booking.

Fortunately, neither the K-9 nor any of the responding officers sustained injuries during the incident.
