Wedge Tornado Devastates Streator; Massive Storms Knock Out Power To 240K

STREATOR, IL – A powerful wedge tornado ripped through the community of Streator on Thursday evening, destroying homes, trapping residents, and plunging the region into total darkness as severe weather battered Illinois and Northwest Indiana for a second consecutive night.

Rescue Operations in Streator

The Illinois State Police confirmed a tornado touchdown in Streator, where the destruction is extensive. First responders conducted multiple rescues from obliterated homes.

Due to downed power lines and heavy debris blocking major roadways, parts of the hardest-hit neighborhoods remain completely inaccessible.

  • Displaced Residents: Streator City Hall (204 S. Bloomington Street) has been designated as the official family reunification center for separated families.

Explosion and Destruction in Bartlett

The northwest suburbs also faced severe impacts, with a confirmed tornado touching down in the Bartlett area.

At a local BP gas station, extreme winds toppled and exploded all gas pumps, throwing the station’s roof blocks away. Nearby, windows were shattered at a Wendy’s restaurant as the storm shook the structure. Miraculously, no immediate injuries were reported in Bartlett.

Northwest Indiana Hard Hit

The storm system cross-tracked into Northwest Indiana, causing widespread damage:

  • School Closures: In Merrillville, Andrean High School suffered severe roof and window damage, forcing the cancellation of all school operations for the foreseeable future.
  • Transit Halted: The South Shore Line suspended all commuter rail service between Chicago and Northwest Indiana due to extensive track and wire damage.
  • Property Damage: Tornadoes were reported on the ground in Hobart, St. John, and Hebron, heavily damaging an apartment complex near 61st and Broadway.

Widespread Power Outages and Airport Chaos

As of late Thursday night, utility companies reported massive grid failures across the region. ComEd reported nearly 195,000 customers without power in Illinois, while NIPSCO reported over 46,000 outages in Indiana.

Air travel was completely disrupted with ground stops at both major airports. O’Hare International Airport saw over 800 flight cancellations and average delays of 100 minutes, while Midway Airport reported dozens of cancellations.

Major Event Cancellations

The severe weather forced major schedule changes across Chicago:

  • Chicago White Sox: The game against the Atlanta Braves was postponed and rescheduled for August 20.
  • Puerto Rican Festival: The opening day at Humboldt Park was postponed and will now open Friday at 3:00 p.m.
  • Concerts: Performances at Huntington Bank Pavilion were rescheduled for August 20, while the Mumford & Sons concert at Wrigley Field faced severe delays.
