LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles County homeowners are raising serious concerns after continuing to receive mail-in ballots for former residents and family members who moved out of state years ago.
Frustration Mounts for Local Residents
The issue has become a recurring problem for Pacific Palisades resident Sue Pascoe, publisher of Circling The News. Even before losing her home in the January 2025 Palisades Fire, Pascoe reported receiving ballots for her adult children. One son is in the military, another is registered in Texas, and her daughter moved away nearly six years ago.
Despite updating records through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and attempting to clear outdated registrations, the election mail keeps arriving. “It’s the expense, the waste, and the question of what happens to all these ballots,” Pascoe stated.
Another Pacific Palisades resident, Sharon Kilbride, noted she still receives ballots for individuals who used her address years ago while participating in local assistance programs. Similar issues were reported by Westside resident Pia Altavilla, whose family still receives ballots for her brother despite him establishing residency in Utah four years ago.
Federal Lawsuit Targets California Voter Rolls
These grassroots frustrations coincide with an escalating legal battle over the state’s voter management. Judicial Watch recently filed a federal lawsuit against California Secretary of State Shirley Weber.
The lawsuit alleges that California has failed to properly maintain its voter registration records under the National Voter Registration Act. The complaint highlights significant numbers regarding inactive voters on the rolls:
- Total Inactive Registrations: Over 873,000 across California.
- Three Election Cycles (6 Years): 326,608 registrations remain inactive.
- Four Election Cycles (8 Years): 151,202 registrations remain inactive.
The plaintiffs argue that state officials have not made reasonable efforts to clean up the rolls by removing individuals who have permanently relocated or become ineligible.
A Widespread Pattern
The issue is drawing attention across social media platforms as well, where other parents report receiving multiple ballots for adult children who have long since notified the state and re-registered in new counties. Local election integrity and the systemic disconnect between residency and ballot distribution remain under heavy scrutiny as the lawsuit moves forward.
