ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Authorities are searching for two teenagers after a video went viral on social media showing them riding electric bicycles through the aisles of a local Walmart, sparking intense online debate over safety and accountability.
Near-Miss Sparks Confrontation
The incident occurred when two boys, estimated to be 14 or 15 years old, rode their e-bikes directly through the store’s front doors. According to social media reports, the teens navigated the crowded aisles, nearly striking multiple shoppers.
Vince Vasquez, 62, confronted the teenagers after they almost crashed into his wife and daughter. Vasquez stated that the reckless behavior severely startled his daughter, who has autism. Following the confrontation, the juveniles allegedly fled the store through the garden center before Orange County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene.
Viral Video Divides Social Media
The footage has generated mixed reactions online, with users fiercely debating both the teens’ actions and the bystander’s response:
- Safety Concerns: Many users agreed with Vasquez, calling for stricter police patrolling and the confiscation of e-bikes from reckless riders. One commenter noted, “E-bikes are dangerous on a bike path, never mind the aisles of Walmart.”
- Bystander Backlash: Other viewers pointed out that during the confrontation, Vasquez appeared to knock down a store display in an attempt to stop the riders. Critics argued he may have caused more property disruption than the teens, with one user commenting, “Looks like the guy filming knocked more of the product down than the kids did.”
Investigation Ongoing
No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed as local authorities work to identify the juveniles involved.
The incident highlights a growing regional debate across Southern California regarding e-bike safety. While the vehicles have surged in popularity among teenagers because they do not require a driver’s license, critics continue to call for stricter regulations in public and commercial spaces.
