Daughter Of Oscar-Winning Director Found Dead Along Interstate 5

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The San Francisco arts community is mourning the loss of a prominent local couple who were found dead inside their vehicle along Interstate 5 on Monday, June 15.

Tragic Discovery On The Interstate

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers discovered the victims around 5:46 p.m. on the right shoulder of northbound Interstate 5, just north of Fawndale Road. An officer noticed a 2022 Jeep Compass with its engine still running and found both occupants unresponsive inside.

Despite immediate first-aid efforts by officers and arriving medical personnel, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have identified the couple as Judith Sheldon, 84, and Wylie Sheldon, 86, of San Francisco.

Investigation Into The Cause

While the CHP stated that the deaths “appear to be medically related,” an official investigation into the exact cause is ongoing. Extreme weather may have played a factor, as temperatures in the area reached a blistering 109 degrees that afternoon.

The couple was reportedly traveling to Ashland to attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival at the time of the tragedy.

Hollywood and Arts Community Connections

Judith Sheldon was the daughter of legendary, Oscar-winning Hollywood film director William Wyler.

Both Judith and Wylie were deeply revered figures in the San Francisco arts scene. Judith served as the board chairman for the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. Leadership at the festival expressed deep sorrow, remembering the couple as incredibly devoted to each other, warm, curious, and deeply supportive of local artists.
