Bessemer, Alabama — A heartbreaking incident has left a family devastated after a father and his young son were killed in a roadway accident, with loved ones remembering the man as a hero who acted instinctively to protect his child.
The tragedy occurred on the evening of March 15 along Eastern Valley Road, where authorities say both victims were struck by a vehicle.
Father and son killed in sudden accident
According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, 33-year-old Orlin Dariel-Rodriguez and 3-year-old Jared Ramos were on the roadway when the collision happened.
First responders arrived at the scene but were unable to save them.
“Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene,” officials confirmed.
Authorities noted that the driver remained at the location and is cooperating with the investigation, which is still ongoing.
Child reportedly ran into road moments before crash
Family members shared that the incident happened shortly after the father and son returned home from grocery shopping.
According to a relative, the toddler exited through an open door and ran toward the road, prompting an immediate reaction from his father.
“He ran after his son right away,” a family member said.
In those critical seconds, the father reached his child but did not have enough time to move out of the path of the approaching vehicle.
“He grabbed him, but there was no time to get back,” the relative explained.
