BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. — An Alabama man is facing multiple criminal charges after deputies say he allowed an 18-month-old child to ride on his motorcycle without a helmet before crashing the vehicle and leaving the scene without reporting the incident.
Authorities say the crash left the toddler with serious injuries, prompting an investigation that led to the man’s arrest weeks later.
According to jail records, Aaron Roberson, 32, has been charged with second-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident causing injury, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving.
Crash Happened While Child Rode Without Helmet
Investigators say the incident occurred on Feb. 14 in Blount County, about 50 miles north of Birmingham.
According to court documents, Roberson allegedly allowed the 18-month-old child to ride on his motorcycle even though neither he nor the toddler was wearing a helmet.
Officials say the man was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Deputies say Roberson was speeding along a paved roadway when he lost control of the motorcycle.
Investigators say the crash caused serious injuries to the child’s face and head.
Deputies Say Driver Left Scene Without Calling for Help
Authorities say Roberson did not contact emergency services after the crash.
Instead, investigators allege he left the scene without reporting the accident or seeking immediate help for the injured child.
Court documents indicate the suspect was with other individuals when he fled the crash site.
Officials say the defendant did not provide necessary assistance to the toddler before leaving the area.
Investigators have not publicly released updated details about the child’s current condition.
Arrest Made Nearly a Month Later
Authorities continued investigating the crash for several weeks before making an arrest.
Roberson was taken into custody on Wednesday and booked into the Blount County Jail on the four charges. Officials say he was initially held on a $37,000 bond.
Jail records indicate he was released the following day after posting bond.
