MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A China Grove man has been charged in connection with the armed robbery of a Dollar Tree store in Mooresville over the weekend, according to the Mooresville Police Department.
Police announced Thursday that David Daniel Hunter, 62, was arrested following an investigation into a robbery reported Sunday at the Dollar Tree located at 221-R Norman Station Boulevard.
According to a news release, Mooresville police officers were dispatched to the store after receiving a report of an armed robbery. Surveillance footage reviewed by officers showed a man entering the store, approaching employees, and producing a handgun. The suspect demanded that employees turn over all the money from the store’s safe.
After obtaining the cash, the suspect reportedly took the store’s phone and fled the scene.
During the investigation, police learned that multiple armed robberies had occurred at Dollar Tree stores in other jurisdictions during the previous week. Detectives determined the suspect was using a dark-colored Honda sedan and, through further investigation, identified Hunter as the suspect.
Arrest warrants were obtained, and Hunter was taken into custody Wednesday in Bristol, Virginia, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service. Police said the arrest was made without incident.
Hunter was ordered held without bond pending extradition and is currently being held in Abingdon, Virginia, at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority.
He has been charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Authorities said additional charges are expected from the Mooresville Police Department and surrounding jurisdictions.
The Mooresville Police Department expressed gratitude to the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bristol, Virginia Police Department for their assistance in apprehending the suspect.
