Jersey City Landmark Faces Shutdown After Shocking 30-Day Eviction Notice

Jersey City Icon Boulevard Drinks Facing 30-Day Eviction Notice

JERSEY CITY, NJ – A Journal Square institution that has served the community for nearly 90 years is fighting for its survival. Boulevard Drinks, a beloved hot dog staple, has reportedly been given just 30 days to vacate its long-time home to make way for new development.

The 30-Day Ultimatum

The management at Boulevard Drinks recently revealed that the building’s new owner has ordered them to find a new location within a month. The move comes as the area prepares for a massive redevelopment project that is expected to include a new Whole Foods market.

“We don’t want to go anywhere,” said manager Victor Victoratos, who has been with the restaurant for nearly 50 years. He emphasized that the shop has always been a vital part of the Square and a go-to spot for commuters.

A Legal Battle Over The Lease

While the new owners are pushing for a quick exit, Boulevard Drinks management claims they have a legal right to stay. According to Victoratos, the shop holds a lease that is valid until 2034.

The dispute appears to stem from a lack of disclosure during the building’s sale. “The previous owner never disclosed they gave us a lease till 2034,” Victoratos stated, noting that attorneys now have all the documentation and proof of the long-term agreement.

Development vs. Heritage

The situation has caught the attention of local officials. Ward C Councilman Tom Zuppa expressed support for the upcoming development—which promises 85 new affordable housing units—but insisted that it should not come at the expense of Jersey City mainstays.

Community members have already begun voicing their concerns, fearing that the “rapidly changing neighborhood” is losing the very landmarks that define its character.
