Paducah, KY – A powerful cold front is set to sweep across western Kentucky late tonight into early Friday, triggering rounds of showers, scattered thunderstorms, and a noticeable shift toward much cooler weather for the start of the weekend.
Meteorologists at the National Weather Service are tracking a band of rain expected to develop overnight, with isolated thunderstorms possible — particularly near and north of the Interstate 64 corridor. While the most significant severe weather is forecast to remain farther north, a brief stronger storm cannot be completely ruled out in the region.
Rainfall amounts are expected to remain modest, generally ranging from one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch for most communities. However, the timing of the rain — arriving during the late-night and early-morning hours — could create slick roadways and reduced visibility for early Friday commuters.
The most noticeable change will arrive after the front passes. Much colder air will surge into the area Friday, bringing temperatures that will run roughly 30 to 35 degrees lower than what residents experienced earlier this week. Afternoon highs are projected to remain in the 50s to low 60s, a sharp contrast to recent warmth.
The cooler air will persist into Saturday, and forecasters are monitoring the potential for near-freezing or freezing temperatures early Saturday morning across northern portions of western Kentucky and surrounding areas. Gardeners and farmers may need to take precautions to protect sensitive plants, and those with outdoor plans should prepare for brisk conditions.
Winds behind the front may also add to the chill, making it feel even cooler during the day on Friday and Saturday.
The cold snap, however, is not expected to last long. Temperatures are forecast to rebound by Sunday, with highs returning to the 60s and 70s. Early next week could bring readings approaching 80 degrees once again, signaling a quick return to springlike warmth.
Residents across western Kentucky, southern Illinois, and southeast Missouri should stay alert for overnight weather changes, allow extra travel time Friday morning, and prepare for a noticeably cooler end to the week before milder conditions return.
