WASHINGTON — More than 150,000 magnet chess games sold across the United States are being recalled after federal safety officials warned the products could pose a serious injury hazard to children.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall affects magnet-based tabletop games manufactured by Stoney Games, LLC, a company based in Bexley, Ohio. The agency announced the recall on March 12 after identifying a potential danger involving the product’s small, high-powered magnets.
Officials say the magnets included in the games could become loose and pose a serious ingestion hazard, particularly for young children.
High-Powered Magnets Pose Serious Health Risks
Safety regulators say the recall was issued because the product contains small, powerful magnets that can detach and be swallowed.
When swallowed, these magnets can attract each other inside the body or attach to other metal objects.
The CPSC warned that swallowed magnets can become lodged in the digestive system and cause severe internal injuries.
Medical experts say this type of ingestion can lead to intestinal twisting, blockages, punctures, blood poisoning, and even death in severe cases.
Although the potential risks are serious, officials say no injuries have been reported so far in connection with the recalled product.
Recalled Product Identified as Kluster Magnet Chess Game
The recall specifically affects Kluster Fun Tabletop Magnet Chess Games, which contain small loose magnets measuring approximately 0.5 to 1 inch wide and 0.3 to 0.4 inches high.
The game is sold in a black box with the word “Kluster” printed on the front.
According to the CPSC, the recalled game package includes:
- 24 small magnets
- An orange string used during gameplay
- An instruction manual
- A black storage pouch labeled “Kluster”
These components are part of a tabletop strategy game that relies on magnetic pieces placed within a string boundary.
Games Sold Nationwide and Online
Officials say the recalled magnet games were sold widely across the United States between October 2018 and September 2025.
Consumers could purchase the product at independent game stores nationwide as well as through several online retailers.
The games were available through:
- Klustermagnets.com
- Amazon
- Etsy
The product typically sold for between $15 and $20, making it widely accessible to consumers.
Because of the long sales period and national distribution, thousands of households may still have the product.
What Consumers Should Do Immediately
The CPSC is urging consumers who own the recalled product to stop using it immediately.

Parents and guardians are specifically advised to keep the magnets away from children to prevent accidental ingestion.
Officials recommend contacting Stoney Games for instructions on safely disposing of the recalled magnets.
Consumers may also be eligible to receive replacement magnets that are not considered small parts, which reduces the safety risk.
The company is providing additional instructions to help customers safely discard the recalled components.
Why Magnet Safety Is a Growing Concern
Federal regulators have repeatedly warned about the dangers of high-powered magnets in toys and games.
When multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attract each other through intestinal walls, causing severe internal damage that often requires emergency surgery.
Because of these risks, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has increasingly targeted products containing loose or detachable magnets, particularly those accessible to children.
Officials say recalls like this are intended to prevent injuries before they occur.
Consumers who believe they have the recalled magnet chess game are encouraged to check the packaging and follow safety instructions issued by the manufacturer.
