Driver Killed After Fleeing Texas Border Patrol Checkpoint, Shooting at Officers During I-10 Chase

Sierra Blanca, Texas — A high-speed pursuit that began at a Border Patrol checkpoint in West Texas ended in a deadly confrontation after authorities say a driver fled in a stolen vehicle and opened fire on law enforcement officers.

The suspect, identified as James Douglas McMillan, 33, from Wisconsin, was killed Wednesday after a chase along Interstate 10 that authorities say involved gunfire and speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

Chase Began at Sierra Blanca Checkpoint

The incident began when McMillan drove through the Sierra Blanca Border Patrol Checkpoint, located roughly 90 miles east of El Paso.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a drug-detection K-9 alerted agents to McMillan’s vehicle during inspection.

When officers asked him to pull over for further search, the driver accelerated away from the checkpoint, triggering a pursuit along Interstate 10.

Authorities say the chase quickly escalated as law enforcement units and a helicopter joined the pursuit.

Suspect Allegedly Fired at Officers and Vehicles

During the chase, officials say McMillan began firing shots from his vehicle.

Investigators say he fired indiscriminately out of his car window at law enforcement officers and passing civilian vehicles.

Officers returned fire while continuing the pursuit.

The chase covered approximately 70 miles along Interstate 10, with speeds reported to have exceeded 100 miles per hour.

Vehicle Crash and Armed Standoff

Authorities eventually used a tactical maneuver to force the suspect’s vehicle off the roadway near the town of Kent in Culberson County.

After the crash, investigators say McMillan barricaded himself inside the vehicle.

Officials said the suspect later pointed a weapon toward officers, prompting law enforcement to open fire.

McMillan was shot and killed at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that no officers or civilians were injured during the incident.

Drugs and Stolen Vehicle Discovered

After the shooting, investigators searched the vehicle and found illegal drugs, including suspected fentanyl, according to DPS.

Authorities also determined the vehicle had been reported stolen in Maricopa, Arizona, on March 2.

The pursuit involved multiple agencies, including:

• U.S. Border Patrol
• Culberson County Sheriff’s Office
• Texas Department of Public Safety

Officials have not yet determined which agency fired the fatal shot.

Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene

Drivers traveling on Interstate 10 reported seeing the chase unfold.

One witness, Olivia Siqueiros, said she and her family initially did not realize what was happening when the vehicles sped past them.

“We got out of our cars because we were trying to figure out what was happening,” she said. “Then we saw a flash grenade go off and heard several gunshots.”

Witness video later showed the suspect’s vehicle wedged in a roadside ditch with doors open as authorities surrounded the area.

Investigation Underway

The incident is now under investigation by the Texas Rangers with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Border Patrol.

Officials say the public is not currently in danger, though drivers were advised to avoid the Interstate 10 area near Kent while investigators process the scene.

The Sierra Blanca checkpoint where the pursuit began is considered one of the busiest interior Border Patrol checkpoints in the United States.

Authorities say the facility processes thousands of vehicles daily traveling through the region.
