Elderly Driver Plows Into Grocery Store Entrance in Ypsilanti Township, Investigation Ongoing

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Authorities are investigating after an 81-year-old woman drove her vehicle into the front of a local grocery store Wednesday afternoon, causing damage to the building and minor injuries to a nearby pedestrian.

The crash occurred around 2:01 p.m. at a store located in the 2000 block of Whitaker Road. Deputies and emergency medical personnel quickly arrived at the scene after receiving reports of a vehicle striking the storefront.

According to officials, the elderly driver, a resident of Ypsilanti, was not physically injured but appeared shaken following the incident. First responders evaluated her at the scene as a precaution.

A pedestrian who was near the entrance at the time managed to jump out of the vehicle’s path but sustained minor injuries in the process. Emergency crews treated the individual on-site, and no hospitalization was required.

The impact caused visible damage to the store’s exterior entrance area. Employees and customers inside the building were reportedly startled by the sudden crash, but no additional injuries have been reported.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Investigators are working to establish whether the crash was the result of mechanical failure, driver error, or a medical episode.

The incident remains under investigation as officials continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash.
