HOLLYWOOD HILLS, CA — A quiet neighborhood near a local elementary school became a crime scene on Thursday night after an elderly woman was assaulted and strangled inside her home during a brazen robbery.
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers rushed to the 8500 block of Lookout Mountain Avenue, located near Wonderland Avenue Elementary School, just before 8:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a victim in her 70s who had been the target of a violent physical assault.
A Brutal Assault and Theft
According to police, at least two men wearing masks and hoodies forced their way into the residence. During the struggle, the victim was strangled. She was subsequently transported to a local hospital; while her specific condition has not been released, the nature of the assault has left the community shaken.
The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry.
The “Perfect Target”: Neighbor Blames Lack of Lighting
The home is located on a secluded stretch of the Hollywood Hills. A neighbor, identified only as Chris, noted that the geography of the street likely played a role in the suspects’ choice of target.
“It’s a dark street. It’s at the top. Dead-end street. Not many people on it,” Chris said. “So, of course, it’s like the perfect street for a break-in.”
The lack of street lights and the isolated nature of the dead-end road provided the suspects with the cover of darkness needed to escape.
Suspect and Vehicle Description
The LAPD has released the following details regarding the suspects:
- Suspects: At least two males, wearing hoodies and masks.
- Getaway Vehicle: A white Honda Accord.
- Direction of Flight: Unknown.
Due to the violent nature of the strangulation and the age of the victim, the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division has officially taken over the investigation.
Rising Concerns in the Hills
This incident follows a string of “follow-home” and high-end robberies that have plagued the Hollywood Hills and surrounding luxury neighborhoods over the past year. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, especially those living on secluded or poorly lit streets.
Safety Tips for Residents:
- Ensure all entry points are secured with high-quality locks and deadbolts.
- Install motion-sensor lighting around the perimeter of your property.
- Check that security cameras are functional and covering “blind spots” like side yards or dead-ends.
