Metrobus Fire Erupts in 9th Street Tunnel: Hybrid Fleet Sidelined as National Mall Traffic Gridlocked

Metrobus Fire Erupts in 9th Street Tunnel Hybrid Fleet Sidelined as National Mall Traffic Gridlocked

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Commuters in downtown Washington face significant delays Friday morning after a Metrobus erupted in flames inside the 9th Street tunnel on Thursday evening. The inferno, which sent a towering plume of black smoke over the National Mall, has triggered a massive safety investigation and the immediate grounding of a portion of the city’s bus fleet.

While the bus was engulfed by flames, transit officials confirmed that no passengers were on board at the time. The driver managed to escape the vehicle safely, and no injuries have been reported despite the scale of the blaze.

Metro Grounds Hybrid Diesel Fleet

In a swift response to the incident, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) officials announced they are pulling all 32 hybrid diesel buses from service. The move is described as a “precautionary measure” while investigators conduct a forensic analysis to determine why the vehicle caught fire.

Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke addressed the public regarding the system’s safety protocols. “We are a very safe system; we know that we are,” Clarke said. “With that said, it’s happened. We want to work with our partners. We’ll do forensic investigations. We will learn from investigations. And we get better.”

Preliminary reports from Metro suggest the cause of the fire was mechanical, though a full technical review is expected to take several days.

Chaos Inside the Tunnel

The fire created a harrowing scene for drivers Thursday night. As the tunnel filled with smoke, several cars became trapped behind the burning bus. Fortunately, the tunnel’s safety infrastructure performed as intended.

“The tunnel is designed with air shafts and vents to give people time to get out,” said DC Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly. Emergency crews were able to eventually clear the stuck vehicles, allowing drivers to exit the tunnel safely. A massive response effort involved 41 units and 120 emergency personnel to contain the fire and manage the scene.

Traffic Advisory: 9th Street Tunnel Closed

As of 5:20 a.m. Friday, the D.C. Department of Transportation (DDOT) confirmed that the 9th Street tunnel at 9th Street and Constitution Avenue NW remains closed to all traffic. Crews have been working through the night to clean debris and inspect the structural integrity of the tunnel following the intense heat of the fire.

Commuter Alert: * Drivers are strongly advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes such as the 12th Street tunnel or the 14th Street Bridge.

  • Expect heavy congestion on Constitution Avenue and surrounding streets throughout the Friday morning rush hour.

Safety and Accountability

This incident puts a spotlight on Metro’s maintenance of its aging hybrid fleet. While the 32 grounded buses represent a small fraction of the total Metrobus fleet, the disruption adds pressure to a system already navigating post-pandemic service adjustments. WMATA has vowed to keep the public informed as the forensic investigation yields more specific answers.
