WHIDBEY ISLAND, WA – A massive fireworks explosion, likely triggered by a cigarette, completely leveled multiple homes and left five people injured in a Washington island community this week.
The Blast and Devastation
The incident occurred at a residence storing a large cache of pyrotechnics. Ring camera footage from the neighborhood captured the exact moment the house was obliterated by a giant fireball, sending thick plumes of smoke into surrounding properties.
The initial blast caused a chain reaction:
- A second neighboring home caught fire and burned to the ground.
- A third home sustained severe structural damage.
- Debris and exploding fireworks shot in all directions, terrifying nearby residents.
Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue Chief Jerry Helm compared the illegal stash to a “ticking time bomb.” Preliminary investigations suggest the blast was caused by someone smoking too close to the fireworks, accidentally dropping hot ash onto the explosives.
Injuries and Emergency Response
The explosion resulted in five injuries, including first responders who rushed to the scene.
Three firefighters were among the injured; two have been discharged from the hospital, while a third remains under medical treatment. Additionally, two civilians bypassed on-scene evaluations and transported themselves directly to local hospitals.
Federal and Local Investigations
Because of the sheer scale of the detonation and the type of explosives involved, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has joined the investigation.
The Island County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they are reviewing the incident and will determine whether criminal charges will be filed once the full investigation is complete.
