Five-Alarm Inferno Rips Through Astoria 6 Firefighters Injured as Flames Gut Apartment and Church

ASTORIA, Queens — A massive firefighting operation took over a quiet Queens neighborhood Thursday night after a residential fire spiraled into a five-alarm blaze, spreading to a historic local church and forcing widespread evacuations.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) confirmed that six firefighters sustained injuries while battling the inferno. Fortunately, officials stated that none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

How the Fire Unfolded

The blaze reportedly broke out just before 7:00 PM on Thursday in an apartment building located on 12th Street, between 27th and Main avenues. What began as a localized fire quickly escalated due to nighttime winds, which whipped the flames and pushed thick, black smoke across the Astoria skyline.

As the fire grew, it jumped from the residential structure to the First Reformed Church of Astoria, a staple of the community. Nearly 200 first responders, including firefighters, paramedics, and emergency units, rushed to the scene to contain the spread.

Residents Forced to Flee

For those living nearby, the evening was defined by chaos and a desperate need for fresh air. The “nighttime breeze” that hampered firefighting efforts also pushed unbearable levels of smoke into surrounding homes.

“Since we live on the third floor, practically all the smoke came into the apartment,” said resident Ana Portilla. “It was unbearable; we had to close the windows.”

Another neighbor, Eliseo Ángeles, noted that the stench of burning debris became so overwhelming that staying indoors was no longer an option. “The smell is very strong, so we had to leave,” he told reporters.

The Aftermath and Investigation

By the time the five-alarm fire was brought under control, several structures had sustained significant damage. FDNY crews remained on the scene throughout the night to douse hot spots and ensure the structural integrity of the affected buildings.

As of Friday morning, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Fire marshals have launched an investigation to determine where and how the sparks first ignited.

Community Watch: Were You Impacted?

This is a developing story in Astoria. The First Reformed Church has long been a landmark in our neighborhood, and our thoughts are with the injured firefighters who risked their lives to save it.

We want to hear from our neighbors:

  • Did you witness the fire or have to evacuate your home?
  • Do you have photos or videos of the emergency response?
  • How can the community come together to help those displaced or the damaged church?
