Five Wounded, Including 3 Students, in Mass Shooting Near University of Iowa Campus

IOWA CITY, IA — A violent night in downtown Iowa City has left five people wounded and a university community in shock. Authorities are currently searching for suspects after a massive brawl escalated into a shooting in the heart of the city’s nightlife district early Sunday morning.

The shooting occurred near the popular pedestrian mall, an area high in foot traffic and filled with bars and restaurants frequented by University of Iowa students.

Chaos Captured on Social Media

Iowa City police were already responding to reports of a “large fight” in the downtown area when gunfire rang out.

Videos circulating on social media captured the terrifying moments leading up to the violence. The footage shows multiple fights breaking out in front of an outdoor bar area before the sound of gunshots sends a crowd of dozens of people sprinting for safety.

The Victims

University and police officials confirmed that five individuals suffered gunshot wounds.

  • Three University of Iowa students are among the wounded.
  • One victim remains in critical condition, while the other four are reported to be in stable condition at local hospitals.

While students were injured, a campus alert noted that early evidence suggests university students may not have been the “intended targets” of the shooter.

Manhunt for “Persons of Interest”

As of Sunday, no arrests have been made. Iowa City police have released photos of several groups of people identified as persons of interest and are asking the public for help in identifying them.

Governor Kim Reynolds issued a statement Sunday morning, offering state resources to assist with the investigation. “This senseless act of violence has devastated the university community and our state,” Reynolds said.

University President Barbara Wilson addressed the 31,000-student campus, stating that support services are being made available for those “hurting or feeling shaken” by the event.

Throughout the early morning hours, the university issued several emergency alerts, urging students to stay clear of the downtown area as the scene remained active and the shooter remained at large.
