Parents Let Toddler Starve to Death as 2-Year-Old’s Weight Drops to Just 17 Pounds

Miami, Oklahoma — An Oklahoma couple has pleaded guilty after authorities said their 2-year-old son died from starvation and severe neglect, a heartbreaking case that has shocked the local community and drawn national attention.

The child, identified as Charles Wayne Ash, reportedly weighed just 17 pounds at the time of his death in September 2024.

Parents Plead Guilty in Child’s Death

According to federal court records, Daniel Ash, 33, and Amber Murphy, 32, each entered guilty pleas to one count of second-degree murder in connection with their son’s death.

Murphy is a member of the Quapaw Nation, placing the case under federal jurisdiction.

Authorities say the couple brought Charles to Integris Baptist Regional Health Center in Miami, Oklahoma, on Sept. 11, 2024. However, doctors were unable to save him, and the toddler was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The case later led to a federal indictment in March 2025 involving Charles’ death and alleged neglect involving the couple’s other four children.

Autopsy Revealed Severe Starvation

An autopsy report obtained by local media painted a disturbing picture of the child’s condition.

According to the report, Charles had “severe muscle wasting” and almost no body fat at the time of his death. Medical examiners also found he was dehydrated, anemic, and suffering from low blood sugar levels.

Perhaps most shocking, investigators learned the toddler had reportedly never been taken to a doctor after being born in July 2022.

When his parents finally brought him to the emergency room, they allegedly told hospital staff he was “not feeling well and having difficulty breathing.”

Doctors reported that the child arrived “unresponsive” and displayed “decorticate posturing,” a reflexive body position often associated with serious brain damage.

The medical examiner further noted that Charles’ brain weighed less than expected for a child his age.

Signs of Neglect Documented

In addition to the severe starvation, officials documented multiple signs of neglect.

The autopsy report stated that the toddler had dirty fingernails and toenails, while his body showed clear evidence of prolonged malnourishment and lack of care.

Authorities believe the neglect extended beyond Charles, as the couple also faced allegations involving their other children.

The disturbing details have left many community members horrified by the suffering the child allegedly endured before his death.

Additional Charge Dropped in Plea Deal

Federal prosecutors had also charged Daniel Ash with engaging in a sexual act with a minor child under 12 years old.

However, that charge was dismissed as part of his plea agreement tied to the murder case.

Ash entered his guilty plea on May 7, while Murphy pleaded guilty the following day on May 8.

Sentencing Still Ahead

At this time, sentencing dates for either parent have not yet been announced.

The case continues to draw strong emotional reactions due to the extreme nature of the alleged neglect and the young age of the victim.

Child welfare advocates say the tragedy highlights the importance of early intervention and community awareness when signs of abuse or neglect may be present.

For many, the heartbreaking details surrounding Charles Wayne Ash’s death are difficult to comprehend, especially given how long the alleged neglect appears to have continued unnoticed.
