Former NYC High School Teacher Pleads Guilty To Child Exploitation Charges

BROOKLYN, NY – A former New York City high school biology teacher faces up to 20 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to federal child pornography charges in Brooklyn Federal Court on Tuesday.

The Investigation and Arrest

Joseph Taylor McKeel, a former educator at Independence High School in Hell’s Kitchen, was arrested by federal agents in March while on his way to work. Prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York stated that a search of his belongings at the time of arrest revealed a storage drive containing illicit material and narcotics paraphernalia.

The investigation into McKeel began in September when international law enforcement operatives tracked an online group sharing illegal material. Federal investigators traced the IP address used by an account linked to McKeel, which led to a search warrant for his residence where additional devices were seized.

School District Response

Following his arrest, McKeel’s employment status was terminated, and his name was removed from the Independence High School directory.

“McKeel possessed graphic images… all while employed in a position of trust as a high school biology teacher,” U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella stated, emphasizing that prosecuting those involved in child exploitation remains a top priority for federal law enforcement partners.

Legal Next Steps

McKeel was previously released on a $200,000 bond under strict conditions, including mandatory placement in a drug treatment program ordered by Brooklyn Magistrate Judge Vera M. Scanlon.

Under federal guidelines, McKeel faces a maximum penalty of 20 years behind bars at his upcoming sentencing hearing.
