EDISON PARK, IN – A tragic Facebook Marketplace transaction turned fatal when a heroic Indiana mother stepped between her teenage son and an armed suspect to protect him.
The Fatal Confrontation
The incident occurred just before 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, on the front porch of a home near the University of Notre Dame. According to the South Bend Police Department, Jean Gragg, 40, and her teenage son were meeting with 18-year-old John Ford to sell a watch.
Family friends noted that such online sales were common for Gragg’s son, who had safely used the platform many times before. However, during the inspection of the timepiece, Ford allegedly pulled out a handgun.
A Mother’s Heroic Final Moments
Witnesses and family friends reported that when Ford pulled the firearm, Gragg immediately intervened to support her son. She wedged herself between the two teens, physically pushing the gunman away and off her property.
As Gragg turned to walk back up her driveway toward the house, Ford allegedly fired multiple rounds. Gragg was struck in the head in front of her family. Nearby security cameras captured the suspect fleeing the scene immediately after the gunfire.
Gragg was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but was tragically declared brain-dead. She was taken off life support on the evening of Saturday, June 13.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Following an intensive investigation, South Bend Police tracked Ford to an apartment complex located two miles from the scene of the shooting. Officers also recovered the suspected murder weapon, which had been discarded over a fence at the complex.
According to court records, Ford admitted to firing the shots during a police interview. He has been booked into the St. Joseph County Jail and is currently being held without bond on charges of:
- Murder
- Attempted Murder
- Robbery
