Fort Lauderdale, Florida – A woman has died and a man was injured after a stolen van crashed into a waterway during a police chase Sunday night, according to authorities.
The incident unfolded in a busy marina area, leaving witnesses shaken as emergency crews rushed to rescue those trapped in the submerged vehicle.
Police chase ends in dramatic crash
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the घटना began around 7:30 p.m. in West Park, when deputies spotted a van that had been reported stolen in Miami-Dade County.
Investigators say the driver, identified as Michael Malik Harvey, was operating the vehicle recklessly before the situation escalated.
“The suspect struck a patrol vehicle, which led to a pursuit,” officials said.
The chase continued along West Hallandale Beach Boulevard before ending in Fort Lauderdale.
Van crashes through gate into marina
Authorities say Harvey drove the van into Yacht Haven Park & Marina on West State Road 84, where the situation took a dangerous turn.
“All of a sudden, ‘boom!’ — the van crashed right through the gate,” a witness recalled.
The vehicle reportedly broke through the entrance gate and continued into the marina, eventually passing between structures before plunging into a nearby waterway connected to the South Fork New River.
Rescue efforts underway as van sinks
Witnesses described chaotic moments as the van entered the water and began to sink.
“They drove into the back, into the water. The man was pulled out first, and CPR started immediately,” a bystander said.
Emergency responders quickly arrived on scene and were able to rescue the driver. However, the woman inside the vehicle was not immediately located.
“She wasn’t pulled out until 15 to 20 minutes later,” another witness said.
The delay made rescue efforts more difficult, as crews worked urgently to locate and recover her from the submerged vehicle.
Woman pronounced dead, driver hospitalized
Both individuals were transported to Broward Health Medical Center following the crash.
Authorities confirmed that the woman did not survive, while the driver was taken to the hospital with injuries.
“The incident remains under active investigation as officials work to determine all the circumstances.”
The identities of those involved have not yet been fully released.
Witnesses describe disturbing scene
People in the area described the incident as both sudden and distressing.
“It was kind of disturbing to watch,” one witness said.
The crash caused visible damage to the marina entrance and left the community shaken by the severity of the incident.
