Puna, Hawaii — A massive manhunt involving local, state and federal authorities came to an end after police arrested a man wanted in connection with the deaths of three men on Hawaii’s Big Island.
Authorities described the suspect as “armed and extremely dangerous” before his capture, which followed days of fear and uncertainty for residents in one of the island’s most rural regions.
Triple-Homicide Investigation Sparks Major Search
Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Jacob Baker of Pahoa, who was arrested Thursday on suspicion of murder, burglary and additional charges.
According to investigators, Baker is believed to be connected to the deaths of three men whose bodies were discovered over a two-day period in different locations across the island.
Authorities said the victims included 69-year-old Robert Shine, a 79-year-old man whose identity remains pending, and 69-year-old John Carse.
The killings occurred in a remote area known for its mix of tropical landscapes, lava fields and isolated communities.
Suspect Found Hiding in Cave
The search intensified after police received information Thursday afternoon suggesting Baker was hiding in a grassy area and attempting to avoid detection.
Hawaii Police Chief Reed Mahuna said authorities learned the suspect was crouching down whenever vehicles passed nearby.
After following up on the tip, officers discovered Baker hiding inside a small cave.
Police then took him into custody without further incident.
The arrest brought relief to many residents who had spent days on edge as law enforcement officers searched the area.
Witness Describes Dramatic Arrest
Resident Deborah Davis happened to be driving through the area when she witnessed the dramatic conclusion of the manhunt.
“I just stopped and I’m thinking, this is it, this is the guy,” she said.
According to Davis, the suspect ran into a grassy driveway and disappeared into nearby vegetation before officers caught up with him.
After the arrest, she watched as officers emerged from the area with a shirtless suspect in handcuffs.
She recalled police celebrating the successful operation.
“They were very happy,” she said. “And I was very grateful. I was thanking them with tears in my eyes.”
Three Men Found Dead Over Two Days
Authorities released additional details regarding the victims and circumstances surrounding the investigation.
Police said Robert Shine was discovered Monday night partially submerged in a cement pond.
The following day, officers found a 79-year-old man dead with apparent blunt-force injuries only a short distance away.
Later Tuesday evening, police responding to a welfare check found John Carse dead at a property approximately 19 miles away.
Investigators said autopsy findings showed Shine died from strangulation, while Carse died from “sharp force trauma.”
Police have not yet disclosed how the second victim died.
Prior Threat Allegations Surface
The killings occurred only days after two women sought temporary restraining orders against Baker.
Court filings reportedly alleged that Baker threatened women living on a farm property and intimidated other residents.
One woman claimed Baker threatened to kill several women staying on the property, while another alleged he harassed a disabled man and repeatedly trespassed.
Both restraining order requests were ultimately denied due to insufficient evidence, according to court records.
Community Relieved but Seeking Answers
While authorities say they are confident Baker is connected to all three deaths, investigators have not publicly identified a motive.
Police also stated they have not established a clear connection among the victims, other than two of them living near each other.
Residents of Puna described the days leading up to the arrest as tense and unsettling.
“In that remoteness, you have lawlessness,” resident Tiffany Edwards Hunt said while describing concerns in the rural community.
The investigation remains active as detectives continue working to determine what led to the deaths of the three men and whether additional charges may follow.
