Iconic Quaker Steak & Lube To Permanently Close Last Florida Location

CLEARWATER, FL – The last remaining Quaker Steak & Lube location in Florida is officially shutting its doors, marking the end of a 23-year run in Clearwater as rising inflation and soaring food costs hit the restaurant industry.

The Clearwater Closure

The muscle car-themed restaurant, located in Clearwater, will permanently close after business hours on July 5. General Manager Hilliary Smith confirmed the decision in a recent social media post, thanking the community for nearly 23 years of service since the location opened in 2003.

While the management did not state a specific reason for the sudden closure, the move comes amid a massive nationwide crunch for steakhouse chains.

The Toll Of Inflation And Beef Prices

Steakhouses across the country are facing an uphill battle against inflation. According to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the cost of beef spiked 16% to $12.73 per pound in March 2026.

Industry experts state that restaurant owners are finding it impossible to cover their expenses. Franchise analysts explain that while operators raise menu prices to keep up with costs, higher prices inevitably discourage diners, leading to a severe drop in revenue.

A Nationwide Trend

The Clearwater closure is part of a broader pattern of prominent restaurant shutdowns across the U.S. over the last three months:

  • Outback Steakhouse: Owner Bloomin’ Brands announced plans to shut 22 locations in 2026 as leases expire.
  • Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse: Permanently closed its Houston location after 25 years.
  • McCormick & Schmick’s: Shuttered its Pittsburgh venue after 18 years in business.
  • Stoney River Steakhouse: Scheduled to close its Towson, Maryland location on June 26.

With the Clearwater location shutting down, the JDK Management-owned Quaker Steak & Lube chain will downsize its footprint further, leaving just 26 stores nationwide from the 50 locations it operated in 2016.
