LONG BEACH, CA — The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) has confirmed a tragic turn in a months-long investigation. A 57-year-old pedestrian who was left unconscious in the street following a late-night hit-and-run in February has succumbed to his injuries.
As the investigation shifts into a fatality case, detectives are renewing their plea to the public to help identify the driver who fled the scene.
The Victim: Ronald Sera
The victim has been identified as Ronald Sera, a resident of Montebello. Sera had been fighting for his life in a local hospital since the collision occurred in late February. On Wednesday, April 15, authorities announced that he had tragically passed away due to the severity of his injuries.
Details of the February Crash
The incident took place in the early morning hours of February 28, 2026. At approximately 1:00 a.m., LBPD officers were dispatched to the busy intersection of Redondo Avenue and Anaheim Street.
Upon arrival, first responders found Sera lying unconscious in the roadway. Long Beach Fire Department personnel quickly transported him to a nearby hospital, but the vehicle that struck him was nowhere to be found.
The Search for a Toyota Previa
According to the LBPD Collision Investigation Detail, Sera was walking across Redondo Avenue inside a marked crosswalk when he was struck.
Evidence at the scene led investigators to believe the suspect vehicle is a Toyota Previa van. Following the collision, the driver failed to stop or render aid—a felony under California law—and was last seen speeding westbound on Anaheim Street.
How You Can Help
The Long Beach Police Department is asking for any witnesses or business owners in the area with surveillance footage to come forward. Even a small detail could be the key to bringing closure to Ronald Sera’s family.
