WOODBURY, NY – A routine check on a suspicious vehicle nearly turned fatal Friday evening when a homeowner was assaulted at knife-point in Woodbury, according to Nassau County Police.
Confrontation in Woodbury
The incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. on Friday, June 19. A 51-year-old homeowner noticed a black 2024 Honda Civic parked outside his residence for an extended period. Intending to check on the driver’s well-being, the homeowner approached the vehicle.
The simple welfare check quickly deteriorated into a verbal dispute between the homeowner and the driver, later identified by police as Bryan Calderon, 22, of Deer Park.
Escalation and Attempted Assault
According to authorities, the confrontation escalated rapidly when Calderon allegedly exited the vehicle, retrieved a long silver knife from the trunk, and grabbed the homeowner in an attempt to stab him.
Fearing for his life, the homeowner managed to shove Calderon to the ground, causing him to drop the weapon. Calderon then fled the scene in the Honda, prompting the homeowner to immediately call 911.
Arrest and Serious Charges
Following an extensive investigation by Nassau County detectives, Calderon was located and arrested without incident on Saturday, June 20.
Calderon faces several serious charges, including:
- First-degree attempted assault
- Second-degree menacing
- Two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon
The suspect was scheduled for arraignment at the First District Court in Hempstead. Under U.S. law, all charges remain allegations until proven guilty in a court of law.
